Yal Devi (Yarl Devi- යාල්දේවි - யாழ்தேவி) the Jaffna - Colombo bound train is back on track after some years of stoppage. This is one of the popular trains in Sri Lanka's history. It is running between Colombo and Jaffna railway line. This Colombo - Jaffna Train route is the most profitable money maker for the Sri Lanka Railways. Lot of passengers used to travel in this line daily up and down. The Yarl Devi locomotive used to pass nearly 35 railway stations on its normal route. Daily one Yal Devi Train service with the number 4077 starts it journey from Colombo to Jaffna. While one Yal Devi Train service with the number 4078 starts it journey from Jaffna towards Colombo. People remember that this train was named as "Yal Devi" in the year 1950. According to the official records, the Yal Devi train made its maiden journey on April 23, 1956. Like Indian Tamil Actress Sri Devi, Devi is a common Tamil girls name and the train serving Yarlpanam Town (Jaffna) made its name as Yal Devi or Yarl Devi. Due to the separatist war the Yaldevi train service was not running its full route from 1990 till 2014. During this period train tracks were damaged due to the war in the Northern Province. Later the Indian Government provided Funds to re-construct the structures and lines in the Northern Province to make the Yarldevi to make its full regular journey.

Notice: Lot of people used to travel from Colombo to Jaffna. In this year 2024 passengers can use the direct run of Yarl Devi Train now daily from 28th of October 2024, the direct service of Yarl Devi Train (யாழ்தேவி) had started after compeleting repair works on the Northern line.
Reserving Seat for Yarl Devi (යාල්දේවි - யாழ்தேவி) Train.
At any of the Computer Seat Reservation providing station, get a seat reservation form. Fill the following.
1. Passenger's NIC/ Passport number (All the passengers must provide one of this)
2. Travelling date and train name.
3. Starting station and Departing station.
4. Passenger's Telephone number.
5. After paying and getting the printed seat reservation ticket, check all the provided details to be correct in it. If not then and there ask the officer to correct it.
6. Now all the train seats can be booked only through the Official website only.
Yal Devi train consists of one Diesel Locomotive Engine, Guard box, Buffet compartment, reserved and un-reserved passenger compartments. Its passengers are provided with electric lights, fans, toilets as western and Asian style in each compartment. When Yaal Devi is starting from each railway stations, announcements will be made about the arrival and the departure of this train. Then the Station Master will blow his whistle or wave green flag, the Guard will display a green flag or green light from his compartment and the driver will blow the Engine's large horn and the train will slowly will move out of the station. Later it will take its full speed.
