Kantharodai Buddhist site is one of the important places that you must see, if you are interested in ancient historical sites in the Jaffna District. Jaffna is a traditionally Hindu religion area although you can view nearly 60 old dagobas in the Chunnakam area. The site came to the light to other parts of Sri Lanka after it was visited by Dr P E Pieris around the year 1917 and pointed it as Kadurugoda which the ancient books written about. The tallest dagoba is 4M and 3.5 M width. The place is located in a two acre land where the dagobas are located very closely and made with sawn coral material.
Take note that the Jaffna Colombo train is now making its full journey. There is a new Sunday special train too had been added to cope with the crowed.
In this year 2023 lot of local and foreign tourists are visiting Kantharodai Buddhist site in large numbers. On their Northern Region Tour these tourists used to add this laocation as an important one to visit. It is easy to reach this place by any vecile as it is located near to main roads. Only the rainy season may not support visiting this location. Take note this place should be visited only in the day time and in the night time there is not much lighting in this area.
You can visit here when you are going to the Keerimalai pond area through the Kankesanthurai road. It is located 8 Km from the Jaffna town near the place called Chunnakam. As this is not a tourist spot or devotional place. There are not much facilities available. Try to visit the area during the day time and when it is not raining. This area is not a populated area. So carry your water and other essential items with you. Or you can buy them at the Chunnakam area where all the good s is available. During the rainy season heavy shower may occur in this area. So be prepared for it, when you are visiting this area during rainy season.
It is good place to make a cycling destination on your tour or good place when you are intended to go one motorcycle tour in the Jaffna district.
