Public Library, Jaffna is now seen as a monument for the Tamils living in the Northern District of Sri Lanka. This public library is seen as a tourist destination for Sri Lanka citizens rather than a real library used to increase the knowledge of the human beings. The reason for to be a tourist destination is nothing else as it was burnt down in the year 1981 with large and rare collection of 95,000 Tamil and English books and works. Then it was the largest library in the South East Asia region and went in to ashes due to arson. Later it was built again. And now it is serving for the local community through its services. Lot of young students visits here to read and get reference from the available books in this library. Public Library, Jaffna is maintained by the Jaffna Municipal Council. In the meantime Indian Government too used to donate books to this library time to time.
Those who want to visit (Tourists) the Library are allowed between 16:00 pm till 17:00 PM.
On the other hand this place now had become as a tourist destination and nearly all the foreign tourist and people from the South Sri Lanka flock here to see what it is really looks like and they it was a burnt down one. The massive white building is being photographed by them while standing in front of it as to keep it as souvenir from their trip to Jaffna. If you like to take photo graph of the building it is better to be there before the noon as the evening sun will send light direct to your camera and shades will fall on your face.
Indian Government and other organizations had recently gifted thousands of books to this Jaffna Library complex for the benefit of the local people. Specially for the higher education sector students too use this library for to develop their education knowledge. Near to this library you can find Jaffna Central College, Dutch Fort, Subramaniam Park and Jaffna District Courts are located. The A9 road which was earlier known as Kandy road starts near to it.
