Nilavarai Bottomless Well got it name due to its deep water point inside of the ground In the older times people were unable to go down in to the well and check its depth with skin diving. So they named it as bottomless well at Nilavarai.
Some years back, Sri Lanka Navy divers went down with robotic diving unit and measured the depth of the well they declared that the well goes down up to 52.5 meters in depth. Around 18 meters are with fresh water from the top surface and below is with salty water. People used to say the well was made by the Legendary Indian King Rama to quench the thirst of his wife Queen Sita. Some people say7 the well was created by fallen asteroid stone thousands of years back. The Nilavarai well was earlier used to provide water through pumping to nearby agriculture farm lands.
Nilavarai Well - loacally called as "Nilavarai Kinaru" in Tamil is located at the end of the Raja Veethy at the Puttur Road Junction. It is around 14 Km from the Jaffna Bus Stand via Point Pedro Road, Kovil Road and take the Raja Veethy.
You have to purchase entrance ticket at the gate.
Also you have to pay ticket fee there, for the vehicle too.
