Travelling in Sri Lanka trains will give you memorable journeys and experience. Also this will allow you to view scenic views on both sides of the track in the hill country. SL Railways operates around 67 long distance and 16 intercity train services on daily basis. German, Spanish, American and UK tourists are much interested to travel in these trains while they are in Sri Lanka. Specially those trains of Colombo, Kandy and Ella sector are nearly fully packed with tourists in the day times. It is very difficult to get tickets for the popular observation cars that are fitted in the back of the trains. They observation cars provide panoramic view of the surrounding mountains and paddy fields while on route through them. Also you can view beautiful tea plantations and rubber trees during the journey along with long bridges.
Always purchase ticket from the station counter, even if you book your train ticket through mobile phone.
Enter the correct class compartment as it is a violation to travel in another class compartment.
All the train compartments will have the class number on the side.
Most of the Srilanka train tickets are valid for 24 hours only.
Authorized ticket checkers may want to see your ticket inside of the compartment. Don't forget it to get back.

Remember these things when you are going to travel by a train.
Before entering to large stations verify on which platform the train will arrive.
Announcement about the trains will be made prior to its arrival and prior to its departure through the public sound system.
If you are going to get down in a small station, keep watching carefully for it.
No announcement will be made inside of the train about the next station.
You have to hand over your train ticket at the gate, when you are leaving the train.
Don't wear gold jewels or expensive watches while traveling in train.
Using Smartphone while sitting next to an opened window is not a good idea. Plenty people had lost their phones at the stations to snatch and run thieves, when the trains start to move from the station.
Don't accept drinks or snacks from other passengers. Some time it may be laced with sleeping tablets.
Always enter the station with your ticket through the front entrance and reach the correct platform.
Keep your bags in your vicinity or under your seat.
In the mornings, it may be cool inside the trains. So keep a blanket handy.
Never use the un-authorized entrances and exits.
Don't sit on the entrance of the compartment while the train is on the move.
Never stretch your leg or hand out of the train, specially near to the bridges and when approaching or leaving stations.
In an emergency you can pull the emergency stop chain. Don't pull it for fun, heavy fines may apply.
Always keep with you enough water supply and snacks, as some times train delays may occur.
Never leave your children unattended while you are travelling in trains.
Don't try to open compartment doors when the train is on the move.
Dispose king coconut and glass bottles properly. Never throw them out of the windows.
Sri Lanka does not allow public smoking, drinking or courting.
Only in the beach use your beach dresses, it is not recommended in public places.
