Important places in Jaffna and their distances are provided here for the benefits of the visitors to Jaffna District. All the distances are measured from the Jaffna central bus stand for easy calculation. This information is helpful for the for the foreign tourists and local visitors. Start your journey with the public transport or with your own transport. Some of the private busses operating to these places are Japanese made one and are good for sitting passengers only. They are cheap but if you don't get a seat then as standing passenger you will suffer terrible experience inside of these busses. Large red color SLTB busses are good for standing passengers too. It is better to self ride a Honda Dio scooter or a Royal Enfield motorcycle on daily rental basis.

Local people used to have their own scooter, motorcycles, three wheels (Tuk Tuk) and bicycles for their own transport. In Jaffna mornings and evenings are full of two wheels on the road. On Sundays there used to be less traffic on the road and it is easy to travel on these days. Tuk Tuk drivers who used to provide rental service can be found at each junction. If you become as a friend of the driver, then the fare can be good after some days. There are some old cars are running as Taxis in the Jaffna Town area.

Before to board a Tuk Tuk, check whether it is having a Tariff meter in it. Also ask one of the bystanders, how much they used to pay for the tuk tuk to go to the place you want to travel.. Then add Rs 50/- for that fare and bargain with the tuk tuk driver, if there is no tariff meter in it. Hindu Temples are called as Kovil and Buddhist temples are called as Pansala by the local people. So if you want to find the route to Nallur Murugan Temple ask the area people for Nallur Kovil route or Apps or on the Maps.

Our advice: While in Jaffna use your own vehicle (Self Drive Rs 5,000/- per day). Or rent a Motorcycle or Scooter if you have driving License. Its Rent price is around S6 -$12 per day. You can rent bicycles on daily rental basis from Rs 100./- up to Rs 1,000/-. Or keep walking or depend on public transport while you are in Jaffna..
