Second International Airport in Sri Lanka.

Sri Lanka's second international airport in the Hambantota district was declared opened by the Sri Lanka President on 18th March 2013. The airport was built with an estimated cost of US $210 million. It can handle the latest Airbus A380 aircraft as it was designed and built according to recommendations of the International Civil Aviation Organization. Currently MRIA is available with 10 parking bays for aircraft along with two aero bridges in 800 hectors of land.

A luxury bus service by the Sri Lanka Transport Board is operating between the Mattala Rajapaksa International Airport and Colombo Fort via the Southern Expressway for the benefit of the air passengers.

The luxury bus service too was started with the opening of the Mattala Rajapaksa International Airport on 18th March 2013.

According to SLTB sources, they will add more buses from the North and East and main towns and cities across the country on this route in due course. Timetables and fares of luxury buses plying on this route will be released in the coming days.

Expected Airlines to operate are Air Arabia, flydubai, Mihin Lanka and SriLankan Airlines (Epected increase with more Airlines.)

Destinations served.

Sharjah, Dubai, Gaya (India), Bangkok-Suvarnabumi, Beijing, Malé, Riyadh and Shanghai (Epected to add more destinations.)

If you want to travel from Mattala International Airport to Jaffna directly avoiding Colombo will be 540 Km

If you want to travel from Mattala International Airport to Jaffna through Colombo will be 650 Km. (You can cut your travel time by using Southern Express way.)

From Colombo to Mattala International Airport using Galle road is 241 Km, while through Panadura and Ratnapura is around 221 Km.

If you can use the Southern Expressway the distance is around 240 km but the driving time is less.
