Public Library, Jaffna.

Public Library, Jaffna is now seen as a monument for the Tamils living in the Northern District of Sri Lanka after it was burnt down by thugs. This public library is seen as one of the tourist destination for Sri Lanka citizens rather than a real library used to increase the knowledge of the human beings. The reason for it to be a tourist destination is nothing else as it was burnt down in the year 1981 with large and rare collection of 95,000 Tamil and English books and works. Then it was the largest library in the South East Asia region and went in to ashes due to arson. Later it was built again. And now it is serving for the local community through its services. Lot of young students’ visits here to read and get reference from the available books in this library. Public Library, Jaffna is maintained by the Jaffna Municipal Council. In the meantime Indian Government too used to donate books to this library time to time. Lot of American and European Tourists used to visit this library. Meanwhile Tamil Diaspora people used to donate books for this library while they visit here. Many tour companies had made this library in Jaffna as an important place to visit for their guests while visiting Jaffna.

Public Library, Jaffna, Visiting Hours For The Tourists.

Those (Tourists) who want to visit the Library will be allowed between 16:00 pm till 17:00 pm.
Library members and students can visit here in office hours with their membership card.

On the other hand this place now had become as a tourist destination and nearly all the foreign tourist and people from the South Sri Lanka flock here to see what it is really looks like and they it was a burnt down one. The massive white building is being photographed by them while standing in front of it as to keep it as souvenir from their trip to Jaffna. If you like to take photo graph of the building it is better to be there before the noon as the evening sun will send light direct to your camera and shades will fall on your face.

Indian Government and other organizations had recently gifted thousands of books to this Jaffna Library complex for the benefit of the local people. Specially for the higher education sector students to use this library for to enhance their education knowledge. Near to this library you can find Jaffna Central College, Dutch Fort, Subramaniam Park and Jaffna District Courts are located. The A9 road which was earlier known as Kandy road starts near to it. On the left side of it stands the Jaffna lagoon which can be seen from the top of the library. Right to the Jaffna library is the Jaffna municipal council's open air stage where musical and cultural events used to take place on special days.

How to reach the Jaffna Library?

When coming from Government secretariat keep going all the way up to Subramaniam Park on the Kandy Road (A9) and turn right (From here you can view the Dutch Fort too) and after 100 meters you can see the library on the left side. Also if you travel from Jaffna town on the KKS road at the end of the road near to the Fort you can see this library on the left side. Walk from the Jaffna hospital towards the clock tower, just next to the clock tower on the right side you can view the Jaffna Library.
